If you’re moving house this summer then take a look at our top tips to make your move as simple and stress free as possible.

Take Photos

If it’s possible, it’s a good idea to take several photos of the interior of your new property before you move in. This will help you plan where your belongings are to go and speed up the unpacking at the other end.

Moving is a great chance to de-clutter and get rid of all the things that you haven’t used since the last time you moved. If you de-clutter it will make your packing time shorter and also give you more space in your new home. You could hold a garage sale to get rid of your items, give them to a charity, sell them on E-bay, or donate them to charity.

Label up Your Chargers

Like most of us you’ve probably got a plethora of laptops, mobile phones, tablets, speakers, and so forth and slinging all of your chargers into one box on the day of moving is only going to add to your stress. Instead, label up each charger so that you know right away what appliance each charger fits.

Don’t Get Locked Out

If you’ve ever had that sinking feeling when the front door swings closed behind you and you realise you can’t get back in, then this one is for you. You’re sure to be going in and out a lot when you’re packing up house so to prevent yourself from getting locked out, take some precautions. Invest in some robust door stops or leave a spare key in a safe place. Good quality door stops will also be helpful to your removalists on moving day which will speed up their job and consequently reduce your costs.

Protect Your Bed

Moving home can be very tiring and the first thing you’ll probably want to do is make up the beds so that you can pack the kids off to bed once they start flagging, and so you can follow quickly behind. To make sure your mattress doesn’t get dirty we can supply mattress covers in a variety of sizes, or alternatively you could invest in some cheap fitted sheets to put on both sides of the mattress to protect it before it gets loaded into the truck.

Get Eating

It’s surprising how many boxes you can fill with food and drinks when you move. Instead of packing it all up, why not make life easy by eating everything in your cupboards and then ordering a home grocery delivery for after you’ve settled in to your new property.

Hopefully these tips will make your move go smoother.

How to Pack the Perfect Box

Can you imagine how upset you’d feel if you arrived at your new home only to find that your favorite dinner set and collection of teapots had been smashed to pieces? Unfortunately, if you fail to pack your boxes properly, then this could actually happen regardless of the care taken by your removalists.

Packing a box properly isn’t that difficult once you know what you’re doing, so why not read on to find out how the professionals do it.

  • Always use proper removal boxes which you can purchase from your removalist company. Not only will this make your task easier but it will also keep your items safer too.
  • Use good quality packing tape to secure the bottom of the box with a cross shape.
  • Make a plan of what you’re going to put in each box and limit the amount of breakables that get placed in it.
  • Screw up several sheets of paper and place it inside the box, extending it up the sides of the box as high as your first row of items. Use paper to pack between the layers and wrap all items carefully. Plates are best packed standing upright. It’s best to use butcher’s paper rather an newspaper as the ink will rub off the newspaper and may mark your items.
  • Start with a layer of the heaviest items, each wrapped separately in butcher’s paper. Pack them tightly together so they can’t move around.
  • On top of this layer place another layer of screwed up paper and extend it up the sides.
  • Continue in this way by layering the items wrapped in plain paper between layers of screwed up paper, finishing with the lightest items at the top.
  • Stop packing when you’re just below the top of the box and finish with another layer of crushed paper. Make sure that all items are packed tightly together and aren’t going to move about when the box is moved, or in transit.
  • Close and tape the box with strong packing tape, being sure to mark clearly what the contents are, and in what room it needs to be placed at the other end.
  • Take care not to overload your boxes and don’t pack large boxes with books or heavy items as they’ll be really difficult to move.

Handy Packing Tips

  • You can save yourself money by packing unbreakable, light items into heavy-duty garbage bags.
  • Put small items such as keys, or nuts and bolts (in the case of flat pack items), into a small plastic bag and tape them securely to the relevant item.
  • Tape appliance cords to the item so that you’re not searching all over the place when you want to use your kettle, for example.
  • Wrap larger breakables such as vases and lamps in bubble wrap.

Moving house yourself isn’t always the cheapest option. You need to take into account such factors as budget, time, schedule, and size of your move, in order to determine whether or not to use a professional mover or packer. Ask yourself whether it’s worth paying that little extra simply to take away the stress and hassle, to allow yourself more time to settle yourself and your family comfortably into your new home.
