How many times have you heard that moving house is one of the most stressful things we do in our lives? Yet on average we Australians put ourselves through it once every 7-10 years. Maybe we’re gluttons for punishment and secretly like the anxiety, frustration, and hassle that goes with a house move, or alternatively (and rather more likely) we simply resign ourselves to the fact that it’s a necessary bi-product of relocating.

The truth is that it really doesn’t have to be this way and while not entirely eliminating all the stress involved in a property relocation, here are some tips that you might want to follow to drastically reduce it.

Plan, Plan, and Plan Some More

When it comes to relocation there’s no such thing as too much planning. Ideally, you should allow yourself about 8 weeks of preparation to try and get everything organized from choosing the removal company to co-ordinating your packing. There’s nothing worse than thinking you’ve got bags of time when the truth is you probably haven’t. The more you plan, the less anxious you’re likely to feel as everything begins to fall into place – fact!

De-Clutter as a Priority

One of the most stressful things associated with a house move is the sheer volume of ‘stuff’ you’ll have to move. Ask yourself a simple question. Do I really need all of these items? If not then be decisive and look at drastically reducing the number of objects you possess. Items that are gathering dust should be the first things to look at, closely followed by least-used items and duplicate items. Remember the more you get rid of now, the easier it is to move and the less it’s going to cost you.

Closing the Chapter

Most people form an emotional attachment to the place they call home and often it can be distressing to leave it. For this reason, it pays to close the chapter. Whether you hold one final get-together with family and friends or whether you have a few quiet drinks to reflect, it’s all about letting go, By doing so, it’s often far easier to prepare for your impending move, feeling less anxious and more positive.

Giving Yourself a Treat

Personal rewards are a great feel-good-factor after having achieved something – and let’s face it, house relocation is no small feat. So why not crack open the bucket of Háagen-Dazs when you’ve finished tackling a room full of packing, or take yourself out for a meal before the onslaught of packing boxes and brown tape gets too much. Maintaining your well-being while moving home shouldn’t be taken lightly, so taking time out to visit friends, watch a movie, or simply indulge yourself is all part of maintaining your sanity.
